    Characters: Inspector Lestrade, Original Character

Any option was intolerable. That was the nub of it. But this old earnest country officer had hit on the least tolerable explanation there was.

"You aren't angry at me, Inspector Lestrade?" said Palk, quavering.

"Not yet," I growled. "Not till you know from me -"

He backed away; I had, unknowingly, come inches from his face. "I feel you... may be overly vested in this matter, Inspector."

I forced my body to uncurl. "Palk. You'd not find a London detective that wasn't vested. It's not standard procedure, but the whole Met was queued up to take the first wagon here."

I wondered, then - only then did it occur to me - if Holmes had had any idea what he'd meant to us. It was, sometimes, as though the only thing he couldn't discern was our admiration.

Too late to tell him. The horror of his death-mask will haunt me to the end.

"And, Palk, all this talk of open windows and living in close quarters - plausible enough, to an outsider, but I knew Dr Watson." My voice cracked. "He would no more do this than - than Holmes himself. The sight alone would have... No. The murderer is away free, perfectly sound in mind, and be he in Tredannick Wollas or London or the bleeding heart of Africa, I will have the bastard."

    Characters: Holmes & Watson
    Fandom: Lenfilms (Livanov + Solomin)
    Rating: T
Notes/Warnings: centres on drug use - the Lenfilms series never brings this up at all, so I felt like doing it.
    Word count: 193

When Watson knocked upon his flatmate's door with no response, it flew open with concern.

Holmes was awake. He wasn't injured. He was attempting to conceal something. But it was to little avail - the puncture marks in his arm revealed the truth to the practised doctor's eyes readily.

"Watson," he said with a small, sheepish smile. His left arm was tucked behind him.

"Holmes," his partner replied cautiously. "You aren't injured, are you?"

"No, doctor, just dosing my regular seven-per-cent solution. It is cocaine."

Watson stepped forward quickly. "And why do you do this?"

Holmes sighed, and pulled his friend back down. "It is alright, my dear Watson. Problems are what give me any motivation to complete normal tasks. When I do not have problems, it must be cocaine."

    "My dear Holmes-"

"I beg of you to allow me to keep my autonomy in this, Watson. Please, be my devil's advocate, and understand where I coming from."
Holmes took his companion's hand, mottled arm displayed.

Watson's eyebrows knotted, and he nodded slowly. "Alright, Holmes. If you ever need me, regarding this, I will always come to help."

    "Thank you, my dear friend."
